DONATE
Did you know that…
(According to statistics
from the Violence....)
1 in 3 women in Ghana have experienced
physical violence by an intimate partner
1 in 10 women had male partners hurt people
they cared about as a way to hurt them
Nearly 70% of women and children are
psychologically abused in Ghana
This means there is a
very good chance that one or more of the
women and/or children in your life have been
victims of domestic violence or sexual
abuse. Maybe s/he is someone you love
dearly, a cousin, aunt, niece, friend, or
maybe even you yourself. So now is the time
to do something about this and make a
difference in the lives of women and
children who are caught in the cycle of
abuse.
Women's Initiative for
Self-Empowerment (WISE) is an organization
committed to doing just this. WISE is a
non-governmental, non-profit organization
dedicated to providing counseling and
support services to women and children
survivors of violence. Operating since 1999,
our vision is to break the cycle of violence
and sexual assault that is a social reality
in everyday life for many women and children
in Ghana, and our mission is to meet the
growing need for counseling and support
services for survivors of violence.
As an example of the
difference your support can make, please
read the following success story;
The Change in Ama…
15 year old "Ama", a survivor of defilement,
was brought to WISE withdrawn and
non-communicative. She avoided eye contact
and answered open-ended questions with
monosyllables and lack of emotion. She
showed signs of fatigue, was isolated from
peer, family, and church supports, and was
unable to discuss emotions or thoughts
concerning the defilement or the abortion
that was chosen for her seven months into
the pregnancy. She blamed herself, as did
her father.
Since coming to WISE, "Ama"
has taken charge of her life. She is on a
waiting list for training in computer
technology, has moved to a safer residence,
and has shared her history of abuse with
select peers and her church group, who are
an active source of support. She has
continued support counseling with an aim of
working through her relationship
difficulties with her father, who now feels
responsible for her defilement due to poor
supervision. He has assumed responsibility
for her maintenance and school fees. Her
outgoing manner and apparent confidence make
it easy to confuse "Ama's" visits to WISE
with that of a volunteer or job applicant…
With your generosity, it
is possible to make a difference. With each
person we counsel, every service provider we
train, every outreach program we hold, every
article printed in the newspaper, or radio
program aired, WISE is helping bring Ghana
one step closer to ending the cycle of
violence that is a social reality for so
many women and children. But we can only do
this with your support. So again, please
take this opportunity to join WISE, show
your support, and help make a difference!
Thank you!
